All about protective coatings

protective coating systemsBefore one considers industrial protective coatings, we must be aware of the limitations of the various coating systems.  In particular, one must take note of the following:

The coating itself – is it appropriate? What is its melting point how does it react to temperature, how dense is it?

How resistant is the coating? – When you are choosing an industrial strength coating, the primary reason you are making the decision is for its resistance to whatever stress you are going to be putting it under.  However, one needs to know exactly how resistant the coating is  not just to primary stressor, but secondary ones as well.

Is it environmentally compatible?  - Does the coating function in the climate where it will be used? Obviously like above we need to be aware of secondary stressors, and thermal stress due to climate and pollution are both factors in choice of appropriate coatings.   High temperature conditions can lead to situations such as bulk diffusion.  Also in our modern eco-friendly society, we need to be aware of the ‘green’ factor.

Cost Factors? - Ideally, a coating needs to be affordable.  One must ensure that benefits outweigh the costs that are incurred, and that the costs for application are included.  Good application is a critical factor, as failure is very expensive, and disastrous.  When costing a coating, you must be prepared to raise your target in order to reach a suitable end result.
