All about protective coatings

epoxiesEpoxies probably are a realistic option if the application does not pose extreme stress on the structure / coating.  Whilst there are a great number of them available on the market, they exhibit one major flaw, and that is that they don’t exhibit the same level of performance metal or ceramic coatings show when it comes to thermal resistance and chemical resistance.  As a result, they are still very much a viable option for protection against wear, for example sewer pipes, they also show some resistance to impact.  Bonded epoxies are popular because they are very cheap and cost efficient to install.   As unlike the ceramics or the metal coatings, they can be applied on fabrications with a very low melting point – much more so than ceramics.  As a result, they are commonly used to protect against wear etc.

Paints are an option also however, whilst being the easiest to apply, they suffer from a variety of flaws – they are not very good at thermal protection.  But they do provide an effective way to protect against minor stresses such as rust and water etc.

There are numerous industrial deployments available, not limited to the above.  Various manufacturers do produce their own proprietary solutions, and detailed research needs to be carried out before any considerations can be made on an individual product.
